How to start your rally driving career

Here is your chance to do something that is unrivalled. The opportunity to control the uncontrollable. The experience of learning to defy logic, physics and gravity. You can now empower yourself to participate in what is arguably the most challenging of motorsports..... Driving flat out on narrow roads in between mostly immovable objects, such as trees, rocks and walls. With the correct approach, the correct training, and a top Rally Car and Team, you can excel very safely in this amazing industry.

The first thing for you to do is to decide upon your chosen level of entry, and this may be determined by your budget. As with most things in life, what you put into your rally career will largely be proportional to what you get out of it, and indeed in the case of the programs that we offer, this is certainly the case. For example, you may wish to choose to do 1 or 2 events from the 2009 Repco Rally Challenge, and if you did so, you will have a fantastic time, and learn a bit about rallying too. However, if you decided to undertake the complete 2009 Repco Rally Challenge, you place yourself into outright overall contention (along with other drivers with no previous rally experience), and this means that you could Win the series, which leads on into 2010, by giving you support on a full assault in the Asia-Pacific Rally Championship, which is year II of a program designed to take you to the World Rally Championship (WRC). So, what you put into your rally career is best decided at the beginning, to avoid any misdirection. If you just want to have a little fun, then there are a number of ways of doing it:

  1. Club Level Rallying

This is where some aspiring drivers choose to start, as well as those just chasing a little fun. The best way to begin is by contacting a local rally club, such as the Nissan Car Club, Hills District Car Club, or Northshore Sporting Car Club if you are in Sydney, Australia. Other clubs around the country or around the world could be found by doing Google Search under "Rally Car Clubs". Club level rallying is mainly conducted in areas local to the rally club, and often feature older rally cars such as Ford Escorts, Datsun 1600's, Datsun 240z's, Holden Gemini's etc. These events are great fun, and you can learn a lot about rallying by participating in them.

  2. State Level Rallying

This level is the next step up from club rallying, and quite often features some faster, four-wheel drive turbocharged cars, as well as a host of other front and rear wheel drive machines. The way to get involved is to again join a local club, which will let you know when these events are on, and what cars would be suitable. You will need a very capable service crew, support vehicle, car trailer, spares and tools for this level of competition. The setup costs are therefore quite high, and this level of rallying (and club level rallying) predominantly feature what are known as "blind rallies", where each participating team has a Driver and a Navigator. The navigator needs to be conversant with the "Route Instructions", which are essentially a set of basic words and diagrams showing only the major hazards. Therefore, the Driver is driving "Blind" most of the time, by needing to drive flat out on a piece of road that he or she may not have seen before, and often at night. This means that local knowledge of the roads or area can be a vital factor in determining the final result, as is the need to be very conversant with this form of driving. Blind rallies do however provide an excellent training ground for Rally Drivers, as each team needs to be very versatile to succeed. Pacenoted Rally Events do simplify this process, as they level the playing field somewhat, and remove the gain that can come form local knowledge of the roads used. Therefore, a really good result can come much more quickly in Pacenoted events.

  3. Australian Rally Championship Rallying

These events are all Pacenote Rallies, and are enormous fun, as well as being very challenging. This is the premier level of Rallying in Australia, and getting started is as simple as giving us a call. And then turning up at the required time for the Rally Event. This is the very exciting opportunity to learn to drive flat - out on Pacenotes, and is where you will be seen, as all the events are televised on Channel Ten on Sunday afternoons. The events are mainly around the eastern states of Australia, and are based in some of the most picturesque locations that Australia has to offer. Participation is easy, as our "fly and drive" Packages within the 2009 Repco Rally Challenge make all aspects of you driving in this exhilarating and amazing series very possible. So, come along and live the dream! This is your chance to get started in top level rallying for a fraction of what it would cost for you to do it yourself, as it is all taken care of by Racesource. See 2009 Repco Rally Challenge for details of the competition that you can enter.
